This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Reading maketh a full man." My scholars take this to heart as they are are dedicated, motivated, and thirst for knowledge.
My scholars strive to be empowered through knowledge and the first stop on this journey is the school library.
Our school community is located in the Lower East Side of New York City and approximately 60% of our students currently live in homeless shelters or transitional housing. The library seeks to play an integral role in building our future leaders.
My Project
I teach in the library of a elementary school, where about 60 percent of my students are in temporary or transitional housing. Due to their housing situations, many of them do not have cozy spaces in their homes to sit and read. Therefore, I am hoping to convert a section of the library into a reading den for my students. By giving students a cozy and comfortable place to read, I am hoping they will find reading more enjoyable and exciting.
Studies have shown that flexible and adaptive areas in libraries are conducive towards learning and to meet the challenging needs of library users, and that making the space seem more homey and welcoming enhances the whole library experience.
Since the environment a student is in has such an impact on how they learn, having this reading nook would make the reading and learning process more enjoyable for my young students.
