My Students
Do you remember curling up on a rug and reading a good book? I'm sure you do, however, I'm sure that rug was clean and in good condition. A nice rug can make a comfortable atmosphere for reading. My students are missing this comfortable setting in their library center.
My pre-kindergarten class is located in a public school in a high-poverty neighborhood.
My pre-k class is funded by a grant from the state and not by the city school district. The state realizes that early learning experiences greatly benefits under privilege children. However, due to budget cuts, they can not provide enough money for supplies in their pre-k programs. The majority of my students come from homes without books, so all of their reading experiences are inside the classroom. In order to motivate them to read, we have established a library center which provides a comfortable place for them to browse through books.
My Project
Our library center is a very important area in our classroom. At the present time, the rug is worn and unattractive. It is important that the area is inviting to the children, so that they would love to spend time there. Studies have shown that children's early reading experience is critical to the development of their lifelong reading skills. In the library, I read to the children and place the books there for their private viewing. They can be observed imitating my reading the stories aloud throughout the day . This "modeling and copying" activity builds the children's vocabulary and makes learning to read easier due to their prior experience with words.
This project is important because early reading experiences are critical to the development of young children's reading and learning.
In order, to provide a comfortable place to explore books and reading activities, we have established a library center. However, the center needs a rug, so that it will be comfortable and inviting to children.
