Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
I do not believe in homework for our students since the lowest students do not have the support at home to help them be successful. Instead, my students simply keep a reading log to turn in each Friday. Students take home a small bag of books to read each week.
Students need a variety of books and many parents need books in Spanish in order to read to their children.
Students are desperate for attention and this activity not only gives them necessary practice, but it also gives them one-on-one time with a parent. This is the most effective way for students to excel in literacy. Help me create a library large enough to supply each student with books at their level to read to their parents and books in Spanish for their parents to read to them as well as audiobooks to listen to in class.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
