My students are middle schoolers ((drop the mic) thank you to those who helped donate that mic). They come in all shapes and sizes, all demeanor and abilities, and all backgrounds. Some are becoming athletes, and some are becoming scholars, a few are working toward both, and there are those that aren't.
They can all find a home in my after school activities.
Regardless of the mix, most can find a way to communicate and achieve the task and challenges I set before them, whether its what's the best way to defeat that Red Dragon or how to create a smoke effect that will lay low and quickly dissipate.
Many of my student are involved in my Strategy, Stage Crew, 3D printing, and now, Raspberry Pi clubs. When they bring their friends, the friends are amazed and ask "Why didn't I know of this before." Of course, the answer is because you didn't listen to the morning announcements.. or read the emails... or wonder where your friends were before now. Either way, we welcome all newcomers and occasionally parents. We have discussed and researched and found that this project may suit our needs in all clubs.
My Project
I would like to give my students of color more opportunities to see representation in the world of literature. I would like them to read about characters that are reflective of them, and to read of authors that may encourage and spark an interest in writing.
People of color (characters and Authors) are far to under represented in most public school libraries.
All of these book will be made immediately available for our students and there families. We hope to start a book club where students can win awards for completing reading lists.
