My Project
In September of this school year, my partner librarian and I decided to get a bearded dragon for the school library. We knew that class pets have numerous benefits, including connecting to a variety of course curricula, providing emotional support to students and staff, and teaching responsibility. Before we acquired a bearded dragon, we asked students to research bearded dragons as well as the benefits of having a class pet. Students then had to create a proposal that was presented to our school’s Assistant Principal in hopes of receiving permission to get a Library Dragon. Once our bearded dragon hatching arrived, the students had a naming contest to name him.
Our Library Dragon, Lord Bartholomew, Destroyer of Worlds, needs this larger terrarium because he is outgrowing his current enclosure.
When we first got our bearded dragon, he weighed a mere 26 grams and was 19 centimeters long; in just 2 months, he’s grown to 85 grams and 31 centimeters! The larger terrarium will allow for larger groups of students to observe Lord Bartholomew at a time. Additionally, the larger space will provide him with more space for enriching climbers and hiding spaces.
Lord Bartholomew’s unofficial title is “Coordinator of Student Engagement” because students love to visit him regularly and ask questions about him. Through their interactions with Lord Bartholomew, the students have learned how to properly care for a bearded dragon and created climbing structures for Lord Bartholomew to enjoy. Students have also tracked his growth, learned how to care for his live food of crickets and dubia roaches, and ensured that his enclosure is at the proper temperatures. Additionally, students gave our bearded dragon baths, took him for walks, and have enjoyed holding him. Our Library Dragon is well loved here at K.J. Middle School.
