This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have a special talent for taking life's painful and violent moments and/or topics and bring messages of hope, comfort and love through dramatic play and rap. Growing up in this city has not been easy, but they have used my worn puppets to tell their stories about bullying and coping.
My students love role-praying, sharing and helping.
They are real problem-solvers. They also love literacy and the Arts. It is not uncommon for them to incorporate rap, song, dance and other expressive means to tell their story. Many have been homeless, witnessed violence and understand the effects of bullying; yet, they are always willing to help others feel better. They are also very motivated, encouraging and very funny. It's never boring in my class.
My Project
An updated library, new puppets and some new books would enhance their shows and lessons. An organized library would make books easier to locate and assist them in recognizing genres and authors. Through Dramatic play students are able to express their feelings, problem-solve and provide positive encouragement for others.
By providing the things we need, my seventeen highly motivated 1st graders will have the materials needed and be encouraged to express themselves positively and achieve more.
Many of our lessons emphasize Character Education and leadership. As leaders of tomorrow they will realize that people must always be willing to invest in people...and Acts of Kindness are symbols of Positive Reinforcement.
