My students need a Grade 5 Classic Grade Level Library (52 Bk Set) for our class library and a Flocabulary software one-year subscription for my students.
"Get ready to learn!" is what I always tell my 5th-grade students every day as a reminder of what they are here for. I start the day with song and dance and have my students pumped up and excited about the day ahead in Mrs. B.'s reading class. I strongly believe in motivation and engagement.
Because of language barriers, not all share the love for reading and writing in English, but I would say that the more they practice, the lesser the challenge-once they are motivated and engaged in the process.
My school has a high number of students who are English Language Learners, and there are a few who are part of special education and gifted program. Ever since Hurricane Irma devastated our community, my students now face the greater challenge of finding the supplies and accessing the resources they need, in order to succeed, as their families experience even worse financial hardship than before.
My Project
Our reading classroom is in dire need of new material to read. Our book center/library is very limited and most of the students have already checked in and out (multiple times) the books we have. We need a library set of books to add to our small inventory, so our 5th-grade reading students can not only improve their literacy skills- but also open the doors of their imagination.
After Hurricane Irma, the local library was closed for a while and students were without new reading materials until they reopened.
This made me realize that I had to furnish my classroom to fill the needs of my students and nourish their desire to read. I decided to request a library set as well as a vocabulary program that they can access online, whether they are in the library, at home, in school or on a cell phone.
Multiple studies have shown that imagining stories helps activate the regions of your brain responsible for better understanding others and seeing the world from a new perspective.
Your support for this library project will enhance the learning environment for our English Language Learners, as well as the gifted and SPED students.
