This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher-librarian at a Title I middle school -- 6th, 7th and 8th grade. I was a classroom teacher for more than two decades before moving to the library. I love my job -- having the time to spend with kids and books and technology is such a kick! The students at my school are amazing! They come to school in a high poverty neighborhood from a variety of living situations: motel rooms, shared housing, trailer parks, and crowded apartments. It's not easy to keep the focus on where they are headed, rather than the situations they are leaving.
The thing is, they still keep coming to school -- and when they get to school, I want it to be worth it!
I want them to see themselves in the literature they read; I want them to find what they are looking for and have the ability to showcase their new knowledge.
My Project
Through reading clubs at lunch, students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will benefit by supported reading environments in which independent reading is followed by small group discussion (ELA RL.6.10, ELA RL.7.10, RL.8.10). Students will have voice and choice in the book they select to read. Additionally, these reading groups will foster friendship and rebuild bonds with the school community.
Items will be used in the library at lunch, which has become something of a community center -- it's a hub of activity.
Students gather to play games and sometimes do crafts. It's a busy place and the kids use a lot of materials. It seems like we have so many kids this year!
