Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a full spectrum of diversity in race, culture, socioeconomic status, and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th and 8th, and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically, our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latino American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander.

We have a variety of different learning challenges and needs that our students deal with on a daily basis.

A quarter of our students are English language learners. Our Special Education students make up 10% of the entire site. We are working hard to ensure that all of our students get their needs met.

My Project

June is LGBTQIA+ pride month, an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, and asexual and/or ally pride. Our district has decided to make sure all students feel fully supported to live their truths and own who they are. That means, as a district, we are doing all we can to support students no matter where they fit into the rainbow. Last month, our the HUSD Trustees unanimously voted to pass a Board Resolution declaring June as Pride Month in HUSD. Here at BHMS, we are trying to make sure all students are heard and celebrated. On our school flag pole, we are joyfully flying a rainbow flag.

This project is a collection of books, flags, and support stickers to help create a fun, educational, and joy-filled atmosphere for the month of pride.

BHMS is an inclusive community where we make sure all students are supported and represented: please help us make this a reality. LGBTQIA+ students are at a greater risk of feeling lonely, left out, or underrepresented. I want every single student who walks our halls to feel like their voice and lifestyle is a celebrated part of our greater community. I hope to use these books to offer students a window into their history and make sure that students understand the struggle these communities have had to face and the work that still needs to be done. I hope to display the flags down the hallway, showing support both on the outside and on the inside. I hope to create a rainbow-filled month where all students know they are honored, respected, loved, valued, cared for, and supported by their school community and allies.
