This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students enrolled in this middle school are bright, eager, and curious scholars with a desire for learning. Most of these students will be first-generation college students: they know and understand that education is the key to success.

Though these students live in a poverty-stricken community, their lives are filled with a wealth of resiliency, persistence, and determination.

These students deserve to have a library that is a safe, inviting, comfortable space where they can come to read, work independently, or in groups.

My Project

The LGBTQIA books featured in this project will expose middle school readers to the many challenges and obstacles often faced by this community. The stories will help them to create empathy and compassion with a group often marginalized. The characters and voices in these books will provide meaningful insights into the LGBTQIA community. Students will learn and grow as they experience the often harrowing stories of characters like Riley from "The Whispers" and Zenobia from "Zenobia July."

Middle school readers must be exposed to stories from various perspectives, including the resilient and vibrant LGBTQIA community.

These books will undoubtedly instill in students a sense of appreciation and compassion towards members of this community. Additionally, some students who might also be struggling with their own gender identities will find comfort and joy in these delightful and meaningful stories.
