LGBTQ Students Require Essential Reading Materials Depicting Their Communities

My Students

The educational complex here on campus is made up two small schools. What sets our student populations, in both schools, from other districts, is our rich and diverse community of many ethic backgrounds. Our campus serves some of the most spoken languages in the Seattle metro area. Many of our students come from social and economical challenged backgrounds. Because of this fact, our campus qualifies for a Title I classification.

The learning communities of both schools participate in curriculum which engage students in: real-world issues of social justice; constructing knowledge about the world and their role within it; demonstration of respect for the world’s people and environment; associate with authentic, community-based experiences; are asked to use their awareness, taking action to improve the world; empowered to use their voice to contribute to society and become active citizens.

Through these authentic and community-based experiences, students are developing 21st-century skills in order to be prepared for college and careers of the future.

My Project

Many students wish to be like the characters in the books they read. However, LGBTQ students, at the moment, are under represented in our library collection. The books I have selected for this project will help my students see that they are a valuable part of our community of learners. These students will come to find, through reading, it is okay for them to lead their own life, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

All walks of gender identity and sexual orientation are represented, however, our library is in need of transgender and gender fluid books most of all.

No matter if these books are fiction or non-fiction, these books are appreciated by our entire student community.
