My Project
To celebrate pride month this year, I would like to build out the classroom libraries in my school with LGBT-inclusive books. All young readers deserve to see multiple identities reflected in the books they read. I feel that elementary-aged students will benefit greatly from seeing the many different types of individuals and families represented in these children's books. Through easy access to LGBT-inclusive books in their classroom libraries, students will learn that all types of families and relationships should be honored and accepted.
As the reading specialist at my school, I plan to support teachers in displaying these books prominently in their classroom libraries.
We will build systems students to be able to check the books out to bring home. We will also work together to develop and implement lessons around the books which will prompt students to think about respecting all identities and families. I believe that this exposure will help to create a more accepting and open school community.
