This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year I am taking full advantage of my platform as a dance instructor to leverage LITERACY at our middle school. In addition to maintaining our highly physical curriculum and performances, we will be engaging in 2-3 book studies this year, all focused around the subject matter of dance.

We will read aloud together in class (teacher read alouds introduce new vocabulary, increase reading fluency, and instill a love for reading which is missing in so many of our students--sadly this practice doesn't often continue into middle school, but research shows it is still of vital importance in the middle grades--especially post covid as we are still closing gaps), discuss and WRITE about what we are reading, and use our readings as inspiration for our creative processes throughout the year.

I couldn't be more excited and passionate about this initiative and all the ways it will create lasting benefits for our students from the way it will encourage their love and knowledge of the art of dance to the very practical implications for improving their literacy and the love of reading that is sure to follow.
