Leveling the Playing Field With Sensory Tools!

My students need basic sensory tools to help them feel comfortable and be successful in the classroom setting.

My Students

As a school social worker, I have the privilege of working with students K-5 with a wide range of abilities and needs. In order to attempt to close the achievement gap, it is important that we provide students with the materials they need to be successful.

Imagine how it would feel as a child to be uncomfortable in your own skin while being surrounded by all your peers in a classroom setting.

Something as simple as noise cancelling headphones, a weighted vest, or stress ball can be a game changer for students who process stimuli differently. We are so fortunate as educators to live in a time where we have access to a multitude of sensory tools to assist with emotional and academic needs. However, a typical school budget is not able to fully cover the cost of these beneficial items.

My Project

Many items are used as sensory supports in the school setting.

These sensory items provide students with the necessary input or output to be successful throughout their day.

Pencil Grippers - Used with students who need a little more reinforcement for a functional grip.

Stress balls, fidgets, and theraputty - a calming strategy in the classroom setting or used as a transitional tool when moving from their desk to the carpet, or in the hallway.

Bracelets and Chewlery - provides oral sensory input

Kinetic Sand - A calm down tool used during classroom breaks

Sound Reducing Headphones - To minimize increased noise and distraction in the classroom for students who are easily distracted and/or have increased sensitivity to sound
