My Students
As my students walk in the the room in the morning, the once empty desks transform to a sea of diversity. Beginning our academic day (and throughout), I ask these little people, "Shall we learn about...?" They reply in eager unison, "We shall!" I look about, seeing little faces ready, willing and able to to tackle the next task that awaits them.
I teach at a school in Los Angeles with a 60% Title I population, and 70% of my class are English Language Learners, and others whom have recently been reclassified.
All my students know they are a part of our special community and that everyone brings something unique to the table. This side or that of the socio-economical spectrum, skin shade or cultural background they are equals and deserve an equitable education... an amazing one at that!
This school year, I am excited to have a classroom of 24 children and more than ten...ten different home languages! How much culture is that?! All in one room...and it's not even the U.N. All the same, we're preparing to lead.
My Project
All students need to read to become better readers. All students must have books on their individual reading level in order to read. Each of my students will borrow 10 books from our classroom library every week. That's 240 a week. We just don't have enough books at some levels in our classroom. It some cases, students will wind up borrowing book they've already borrowed.
Students who read books on their level, progress in reading and writing more rapidly.
Through our reading and writing workshop model, students need books that make sense to them - that they can comprehend in order to, then, study the author; they will learn the hows and whys the "author's moves." Book are not just for teaching reading, anymore.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
