Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at an inner-city school with a low-socioeconomic population. There are about 17 different languages spoken at this school, so books would be great for our English Language Learners. These children are some of the most motivated and genuinely sweet kids you'll ever meet. They are always polite and respectful, and definitely deserving of more valuable resources to help them grow their education.

I am new to this school, and already the students are so welcoming.

Due to their gentle nature, I would like to provide them with tools to help them become productive citizens. Unfortunately, some of the parents do not speak English, nor read in English. Some of the refugee parents can not read in their own language due to lack of education. Our students here deserve a strong foundation, and I know their parents want that for them as well.

My Project

Students across our K-5 school are practicing a new fluency strategy called Dyad reading. To do this, we need books that will excite and motivate students who struggle with reading, as well as proficient students who just need more engagement.

All students will have access to these great books, and will perform partner reading for 15 minutes a day.

It is important that these books are leveled, or can be leveled easily for this type of structured activity to work. Each partner set will have a proficient reader assisting a non-proficient reader. Book choice is one of the most important concepts of this activity, since both students need topics that excite or intrigue them.
