Imagine picking up a book and not being able to read the words. My students need a leveled library to find a book that is "just right" for them!
My students are five and six year old kindergartners at a public school in Philadelphia.
For many of them, this is their first formal schooling experience. After roughly a week of school, they are eager to learn and can not wait to be little readers!
My Project
For many of my students, this will be their first exposure to reading by themselves. Currently, my classroom library is organized by genre. Daily Five, a new program we are launching in our school, encourages teachers to have students select "just right" books. Having leveled books will allow my students to choose a book that fits their reading ability.
Leveled books will provide my students with the confidence they need to become great readers.
By knowing their reading level, they will be able to find books that are on their level. This will increase reading fluency and build positive feelings towards reading. A good foundation and love of reading will lead to better readers in the future. "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body" - Joseph Addison
