This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Over half of my students are second language learners and over eighty percent of them receive free or reduced lunch. As these students receive instruction in English many of them are balancing the difficult task of learning English at the same time as learning grade level standards. In addition to this balancing act some of my students walk into the classroom counting on the meals that are served at school. Although my students walk into our school/classroom with hardships that they cannot control they have a desire to learn. With this desire they find confidence within themselves to be resilient in life.
My Project
This year our school is focusing on Reading. We have been working on how to keep students engaged and practicing their reading every day. Our school decided to do this in order to get students reading on grade level and help their comprehension in other content areas. I am requesting 5 books at a level A, 5 books at a level B, 5 books at a level C, and 5 books at a level D. These levels are equivalent to a Kindergarten level. For those struggling readers in my class it would benefit them tremendously. By having more books in our classroom that meets the needs of their reading level they will be able to practice independently. In addition, it will help students stay more engaged during their reading time because it will provide more of a variety of reading materials. These books will give students more time to read during school hours and providing another reading station for them to practice their reading skills.
