Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The new common core standards are placing increased cognitive and academic demands on students, starting in kindergarten.
My diverse, urban kindergartners are predominately English language learners who live below the poverty line and have not attended preschool.
They live and attend school in the most dangerous neighborhood in our large city. As they walk to school, they pass homeless people sleeping on the streets, drug dealers, and other urban predicaments that children should not experience. However, despite all of these challenges, my students develop a love of learning and want to come to school every day.
My Project
This month I participated in a teacher training at Columbia University Teachers College that revolutionized the way I think about reading at the kindergarten level. The Reading and Writing Project has developed an integrated, differentiated approach to reading and writing that boosts academic expectations in a developmentally appropriate way. However, the success of the program depends heavily upon providing students with books to explore at their own reading levels. I do not have these necessary, engaging, colorful, "just right" texts. I hope that you will help fund sets of leveled books in this grant to start the leveled library in my classroom.
I have seen the results that these books can make possible in my classroom.
Given the needed materials, I believe that I can reach each of my students and boost them to their full potential. Please help my kindergarten readers excel!
