Leveled Readers = Happy Students

My students need leveled readers to help them learn to read on their own during centers.

My Students

My of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and face many challenges on a daily basis. Most are from single parent homes or are immigrants who have just arrived here in the U.S. and speak little to no English. Because of this I strive to make my classroom a safe place where students can be themselves and feel loved and supported. The school district I work in is the #1 most diverse school district in the entire United States and I am very proud of that diversity in our students.

My students are smart, funny, a little silly, and really love being at school.

They love art projects and hands on learning. I try and incorporate science into our learning every day through fun experiments and through short videos. I focus on making my classroom a fun and loving place to learn because many of my students go home to hard situations and may not have a lot of support at home.

My Project

I am a first year teacher so I am desperate for some leveled readers. These readers are awesome for so many reasons. First, I can test my students to see what level they need to be reading at and give them the appropriate leveled reader for their reading ability. I will be using these during centers while I work one on one with students who need further support.

These leveled readers are great because they give students confidence in their reading skills and helps them learn to read at their own pace.

Currently I am having students pick random books from my library to read silently to themselves and many of them are picking books that are too hard for them to read. This leads to frustrated readers and that is the opposite of what I want. The leveled readers will give me a system that will help me build my students confidence in reading and hopefully lead to them falling in love with reading.
