My Students
It is important for kids to read "Just Right" books. I don't have enough level E or level F books for my kids to choose from in our library.
I teach 22 first graders in a Title 1 school.
They are great kids and very hard-working. Their abilities range from Kindergarten to 2nd grade. They are all eager to get better at reading. Many of them have fantastic parent support at home. They just need books on their level.
My Project
I teach reading through a program called Readers' Workshop. One of the most important things that needs to happen during this time is that kids have lots of choices of quality books on their level. We call these "Just Right" books. They need to be able to choose what they read and then be able to have a conversation with me about the book. If we had a few more Level E and Level F books in fiction and nonfiction, my kids would have good choices for their independent reading.
Having lots of books to choose from on their level is super important to their success as readers.
It does not do any good to sit and "look" at a book, nor does it help to read books that are too easy. Having level E and F books will make a huge difference in their growth.
