Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hardworking and resilient! Through all of the obstacles they face on a daily ​basis, my students come every morning ready to learn. My class started this year at an average of two grade levels behind in reading and math. I have several students receiving special education services, and most of my class are English language learners. Many come from single-parent homes and others don't have a home at all.

I may not be able to control the environment they are coming from, but I can control the environment they walk into every morning.

We work collectively to create and maintain a positive, welcoming, and safe space to learn. Our classroom is more than a community of learners; we truly are a family! I am so proud when I see my students protecting each other and lifting one another through kind words and encouragement. I do my best to provide them with everything I possibly can to create a rigorous, yet safe and loving space to learn.

My Project

I have many struggling readers in my classroom and the majority of the books that we have in our library are intimidating. Most books that were provided for our classroom libraries are at or near grade level, while I have very few students reading there. This project will place books at various reading levels in the hands of my students who need them most! These books range in level for beginning readers and progress in difficulty. My students, especially those with special needs, would be able to choose high interest books at their level to enjoy. My students will grow in skill and in confidence.
