This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a school in a low income area where many of my students do not have a place other than school to escape. School to my students is a place to learn, play, and interact with teachers and friends. My classroom is an ICT classroom which means some of my students have a classification. They are excited to come to school every day and see what the day has in store for them.

For many of my students, school is the only constant thing in their lives.

With that being said, it is important to provide them with the education and classroom they so desperately need and deserve.

My Project

I am a first year teacher, teaching in a high poverty community. For many of my kindergartners, this is the first time they are exposed to books and reading.

Having books on their level will spark a LOVE for reading and a passion for learning.

I would love to allow my students to take out books from our classroom library to read at home and improve their skills. But due to the lack of books, they are unable to do so. All of our leveled books in our classroom have been given to us by other teachers in the building. We are so appreciative of these books and use them on a daily basis but they are not enough. A large amount of the books are printed from the computer and the students are unable to enjoy the beautiful illustrations in children's books. Some are missing pages and are written on inside. New books will promote literacy and in turn, improve skills in all subject areas.
