Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade at a public charter school in Washington, DC. Two thirds of our students are considered high-poverty students. What is great about our school is that we not only believe ALL children can achieve an excellent education but that children from diverse backgrounds can get that excellent education under one roof. So our school is about 50% African American, 30% Hispanic, and 20% white.
We approach reading with the Reading Workshop model. This means that following a short lesson, all of our students have independent reading time for at least 20 minutes. During this time the kids are reading "just right" books--which means they are books right on the student's level. This allows them to practice the reading skills they have learned. Right now, we don't have enough books for each student to have a wide variety of books to choose from. . . and their boredom with the current selection is starting to show.
You can help keep our kids engaged in their books by providing a set of leveled books that meets the wide spectrum of their needs. These books vary in ability level and topic which will make sure every student has a book that is "just right."
First grade is the year when reading habits and skills are formed. In this critical time, you can provide the books that are "just right" for my students.
