My Students

This is my 20th year teaching, and the best one yet! I am at a brand new elementary school where students and parents have chosen to be part of this amazing adventure to create lifelong learners. Our school's mindset is to be innovative and ask ourselves—"How Will I Change the WORLD?" I have 22 Kindergartners from across the district, with various backgrounds, personalities, and interests. My students are entering school for the first time, and they are so excited to come to class and learn new concepts. They are especially excited to learn how to read!

I want to give my students the chance to practice reading books on their level both at school and at home.

My Project

Did you know that students start learning to read in kindergarten? It's true! My students start learning to read as soon as they step into my classroom. We practice reading with sight words, poems, and little leveled books that we read during small groups at my table.

My kids are eager to practice their reading at home, but we lack the resources to make this possible.

The books I am requesting range from beginning kindergarten to the beginning of first grade level so I can meet the needs of all of my readers. We need a combination of fiction and non-fiction books in these levels to build upon my students' knowledge and match their interests. These quality take home books on a cart and separated in labeled bins will allow my students to independently select books on their level to take home and practice reading with their parents. Then, they will bring them back, sort them in the correct bins, and select MORE books on their level to do it over again. This daily reading habit will set them up for success in first grade—and in life!
