When I first met the students in the dual language program, I think that it is fair to say that my mind was blown. Never in my previous experiences had I worked in a school where ALL students were given the opportunity to speak Spanish and English, which meant that I had African American, Latino and White students all engaging together during the lesson in beautiful Spanish. What a gift for our students! Their parents made the decision to give them the gift of biliteracy and the opportunity to actively engage in an increasingly globalized world!
Eighty-two percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and many of their parents have limited schooling themselves, yet their parents have taken the leap of providing their children with an exceptional educational opportunity.
I am proud to work with a community that finds value in bilingualism and biliteracy.
My Project
My students love to read and they work diligently in their guided reading groups! However, our school and classroom leveled book sets do not have enough titles to support students with fresh, authentic texts each week. In order cultivate a love of and a joy for reading, I want to be sure that my students have access to real books, and not photocopies of books.
With these engaging nonfiction titles, students will not only learn to read, they will learn more about their world as well.
These books will be used to support English- and Spanish- Language learners to read in Spanish in a dual language kindergarten classroom.
