My Students

Knowledge is power. We want students to learn about physical and mental disabilities and read about them in books that help them empathize with individuals with disabilities. This will allow more opportunities for students with disabilities to understand that there are others like them.

Our students are in an area that is increasingly being impacted by the economy.

Most have very hardworking families, working multiple jobs so that they can stand on their own. Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and often have to move in with relatives after job loss. We have students that have military parents and some who have recently lost parents in service. This past Veteran's Day, some of the many students put together a play they designed to honor veterans. The students at our school really want to make good choices, and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Many of the staff members spend hundreds of their own dollars yearly to provide materials for students and motivational rewards. They continually go above and beyond to help their students. I really love and respect my staff and students. I want to be able to help them as much as I can.

My Project

We are requesting four books that will help students understand mental and physical disabilities. Students in each grade will be able to access the books and have class discussions on individual uniqueness and learn how to empathize with those that have disabilities, as well as appreciate what individuals of all abilities have to offer. Too often we center on what a person cannot do. We want to help highlight what each person can do and what they can offer to those around them.

Society often portrays people with disabilities in a negative light.

We want our students to learn how to look at all individuals in a positive light and understand how everyone is unique. This will also help those with disabilities to understand that others also face the same challenges.
