Letters To The Future: Scholarships For Our Taggers

My students need hardboards and spray paint to turn their passion for tagging into motivation to stay in school and scholarship money for a brighter future.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Brilliant words adorn the papers my students turn in, but they're not part of their grade. Some of my my most vulnerable students are talented taggers who don't see academic pursuits as a part of their future.

My students attend a public high school on Chicago's south side.

They are exuberant and motivated to learn. However, because many of them don't see college as a realistic goal, they sometimes don't take as much pride in their work as they might. They like learning and they like doing well, but personal conversations have indicated that they don't think they can attend a university, due to financial constraints. The work some of my students turn in showcases the names they tag throughout our school's neighborhood (and beyond), and the complexity of their art strengthens my belief that these passionate young scholars need something to keep them striving for more. [Thanks, donorschoose and ABC Family, for supporting student-led initiatives!]

My Project

Your donation to my project buys more than some spray paint for some kids who like to tag on things. It pays for my students to have a reason to wake up and come to school. It gives them a reason to stay late and an understanding that they will have the resources to attend college. This student-led initiative will function as an after school activity for "my taggers." My taggers are Hispanic males who will be first generation college graduates. However, they are currently exhibiting behaviors which characterize them as being at a high risk for dropping out. My taggers want to create a community centered around artistry and motivation. They want to create exceptional works that they can show with pride and eventually auction off, generating scholarship dollars which the school will hold until we get to write checks to their universities! Meanwhile, my taggers will keep each other accountable and will study together. My sophomore taggers will do this each year until graduation.

Your generous support will transform my students from taggers to college students.

It will help them to perceive themselves as motivated scholars. You are giving my taggers the resources to sustain their own scholarship fund. Your donation pays for my taggers to realize that they have a future worth working for--and although we might not know you yet, we love you for it already.
