Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious and enthusiastic students! We are in a kinder/1st grade combo Korean bilingual class where students learn from each other and grow together as a community.

The majority of my students are English language learners with a lot of great ideas and endless potential.

They come from hardworking families and bring values and assets to our classroom. In our Korean dual-language program, students receive language and content instruction in two languages, Korean and English.

Our school is a Title I school, and 88% of the families in our school are socioeconomically disadvantaged. I hope to provide resources that inspire classroom engagement, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity!

Many of my students will just be beginning or have just started their educational journey. I hope to spark a passion for learning for each child and provide a safe space for them.

My Project

Students who are learning about and involved in community service are more aware of their surroundings and the people they encounter in their daily life. I want to educate my students to be compassionate, caring, and empathetic. Showing them these values in action can be more effective than just explaining them. Volunteer experience provides a great opportunity to build students' empathy because by exposing your child to diverse people, situations, age groups, and issues, they will be able to relate to others and be more accepting.

However, due to pandemic and their age, students volunteering in community service is limited.

So I have decided that my students will write letters of gratitude and encouragement to community service workers. Students will learn about different community services available and people who are involved in those services. Also, I will use this opportunity to enhance students' writing by integrating it into social studies and writing integrated lessons. Students will be provided with writing materials such as a laminated sight words list to use for their letters.

These materials will not only be used to write thank you letters to appreciate the time and effort of the community members but to stay in the classroom and to be used for their long term learning.
