My students need games to help them learn letter recognition and letter sounds. The rocket game, sound bingo, and the sliding apples will allow students to match letters and pictures building sound symbol correspondence.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I believe that making learning fun is what gets kids hooked on school from the get go. Every day I try to get my kindergarten students to "play" and simultaneously learn. When my lessons are strategically designed as games, everyone wants to participate and everyone is working hard and having fun!
My school is an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse city school in an older neighborhood.
The students that will benefit from this project are 5 and 6 year olds, for most of whom, this is their first experience with learning in a formal setting. They are so excited to learn about reading, writing, and math! When I can use that budding excitement and create learning momentum with it, perfect environment for successful foundational skills to be mastered is created!
My Project
"In every job that must be done there is an element of fun, you find the fun and... SNAP, the job's a game" -Mary Poppins
Incoming kindergartners have a big dream, they are told from the get go that at school they will learn to read!
As a kindergarten teacher I have a big job, to let these eager little learners in on the secrets of reading! But we have to begin with the basics. Before we can string sounds together, we have to learn letter names and the individual sounds that each letter makes!
I want to create fun games for my students to help them learn their letters and beginning sounds more efficiently and effectively. These materials will do exactly that! The letter rockets will allow my students time to play and simultaneously learn to identify their letters and build sound symbol correspondence, the very fundamentals of reading. These games are simple enough that the kids can play them independently allowing me time to work with small groups and solidify these skills. Kids will be able to match letters and pictures or small objects that begin with the sounds that letter makes. They will use fine motor skills when snapping the letter rockets together, as well as when they are pulling objects out of the mystery letter box. The kid will be matching sounds and symbols during the alphabet slides games helping them learn and identify beginning sounds in words. They will need to use reasoning skills to match pictures and letters together with the alphabet picture magnets based on the beginning sounds in the sorts, as well as in the find the letter game.
