Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergartners readily learn letters and sounds, but it is a challenge for them to transfer that knowledge into making and reading words.
My diverse, urban kindergartners are predominately English language learners who live below the poverty line and have not attended preschool.
They live and attend school in the most dangerous neighborhood in our large city. As they walk to school, they pass homeless people sleeping on the streets, drug dealers, and other sights that many people would do their best to avoid. However, despite all of these challenges, my students develop a love of learning and want to come to school every day.
My Project
One academic challenge many of my students struggle to overcome is transferring knowledge of letters and sounds ("a" is for apple) into the ability to sound out and write words (spelling ant or hat). The activities that I am requesting in this grant are fun word making games with pictures and letters that provide visual and tactile input. The students will work at tables with these activities during center time to practice and build word making skills.
You can help my students expand their knowledge of letter sounds into making and spelling words.
Please know that your support will make a difference in the lives of children and help lay a foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
