This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach reading and writing to nearly 60 third graders at the little urban school that could. We work hard and our school has been recognized for our academic performance. Ninety-eight percent of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a government measure of poverty.
This year students did not show up with enough school supplies to meet the academic needs in my classroom. I did not collect enough composition notebooks to support our district's literacy block.
We need 120 composition notebooks (two for each student). Composition notebooks hold up better than bound loose leaf paper or spiral notebooks. But, they are so much more than paper. These notebooks will be used to record their thinking during reading and writing. They are the place where students will imagine themselves as writers as they construct intimate personal narratives, lively poems, and informative reports. They are the place where students will become literary critics as they share their thinking on books and poems that they have read. They are the place where students jot down their favorite words and phrases with the hopes of improving their vocabulary. In short, they are the place where students archive their dreaming and thinking as third graders. They are magical.
Your help will ensure that students will have the opportunity to think, write, and dream without worrying that there isn't enough room to continue.
