My Students

I am a speech language pathologist in a low-income, high poverty school district and work with students in Kindergarten to 8th grade. I support students in a wide range of classrooms including a Multiple Disability Support Classroom, Autistic Support Classrooms (Kindergarten through 8th grade), a Life Skills Support Classroom, and an Emotional Support Classroom. Although many of my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom, they are are working hard to improve their communication skills. My students learn best from multiple modalities, including visual cues, combined with auditory or tactile cues. Despite these challenges, I am determined to improve their literacy and language skills through writing during their speech sessions.

I want to provide my students with alternative opportunities for improving their literacy skills through writing, whether I write for the student or the student writes independently.

My Project

My students are excited when they can engage in a hands-on activity. I frequently use letter and speech sound awareness during speech sound activities to practice their literacy skills. Some specific examples include having students write words that contain their sounds found in books, having students write words that I read to them that contain their sound and having students read a word I have written using decoding strategies.

The space where I work with students does not have blackboards, dry erase boards or a means to display written language throughout the session to support their speech and language goals.

Having a quick way to write a word or sentence, underline or circle the targeted sound in the word is critical in the amount of time I have with students. Seeing their specific speech targets in written form, in addition to spoken form will provide multiple modalities for them to learn and practice to improve their speech, language and literacy skills.
