This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How many plastic water bottles end up in our landfills every year? I would like my students to stay hydrated in class, but give up using plastic water bottles. Can you please help us?
I teach in a big city in Texas.
All of my students have just moved to the United States and are beginner English speakers. I have a combined 4th and 5th grade class and our program is called the New Arrival Center. I have students from Vietnam, Mexico, El Salvador, China, Colombia, Egypt, and Ukraine. I teach language arts, social studies, and science.
My Project
I would like my students to understand the importance of taking care of our planet Earth. If young students can make small changes in their habits now, we can make big changes on our planet in the long run. I would like my students to stop using plastic water bottles. I am requesting a reusable water bottle for each of my students. Most of my students come from an economically disadvantaged home so this purchase would be considered a luxury item. By our changing to reusable water bottles, think about how many water bottles we would be keeping out of the landfills during one school year. More importantly, we would be starting a lifelong commitment within each student. Then, my goal is to get my class to convince other classes to do the same. I have requested poster board and markers so we can make posters to encourage others to "Save our Planet" and "Use Less Plastic." I have also requested books about recycling to read to the class and to add to our classroom library.
This project is important because it will have a lifelong impact on how students view recycling, taking care of our planet, and using water bottles.
I want my students to see that they can make a difference! We would greatly appreciate your generosity!
