My Project
Ever since the pandemic, my school community has included one of the highest number of refugee families in our school district, which means each year I and many other teachers have students in our classrooms who have only been in the United States for a couple of months and have zero English proficiency.
It is beyond frustrating and sad to not be able to communicate with my students, nor them with me.
Yes, we digitally translate assignments into their language, but we cannot speak to one another efficiently nor have a real human conversation (i.e. How is your day? How are you doing? How is the transition going?) like with all of my English speaking students. Having a translator in my class to develop these relationships will not only benefit their education and language acquisition, but more importantly, it will be creating a sense of belonging and caring between my students and I.
This year I have more than five languages other than English spoken by students and in other years, more than a third of my class (12 students) were non-English speakers. I am hoping to get this project funded so I can build meaning and personal relationships with my students while they learn and practice English.
In addition to my class, I will be giving the other translators to each member of my department, so they and their language learning students can also benefit from this project. My goal is to have one translator in each classroom to start, and eventually, one translator for each English Language Learner (ELL) on our campus.
