This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The English language is made up of 44 sounds that have multiple spellings. This can make learning to read difficult for my students, especially for my second language learners.

The Secret Stories make it easier to "crack the code" needed to read and write.

Students will use visuals, motions, stories, and songs to connect the sounds to the letters that spell them. The stories utilize relatable situations to explain why the letters represent different sounds when they are combined. This helps students be able to critically analyze words and predict which sound the letters will represent when they read or which spelling they should use when they write.

This kit provides the tools to meet the needs of diverse learners. The visuals and actions make it accessible for all students. Students can use the visuals, songs, and motions to help their brains retrieve the correct sound or spelling. Students are not held back by the scope and sequence of the traditional phonics program. For example, /th/ is a skill taught in a future grade, but it is in the high-frequency words my students will see and use in their reading and spelling now. The "secrets" are easily able to be introduced when the student needs the skill.
