Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, College Prep Biology, and Environmental Science. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness and Garden Clubs. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.

My students need a farmstand nook hydroponics system, plant caddy, gardening sheers, and paper towel holders to continue their love of nutrition while learning about alternative ways to grow food.

We currently have 2 hydroponics systems. One is tiny and perfect for herbs. The other holds 3 large plants for tomatoes or other tall plants. This new third hydroponics system will allow the students to grow 20 plants at a time of various vegetables sizes and edible flowers. The farmstand nook hydroponics system will be the perfect size to grow various lettuce and small to medium veggies. Some of my students want to grow edible flowers and that will be something new we try. We need the plant caddy dolly to place under the farmstand so we can rotate it when we need to harvest our plants. This farmstand will be placed in a corner so the plant caddy will allow us to rotate it. The gardening sheers are needed to trim back, harvest and prune the plants.

Lastly, we are getting very tight on space in my classroom and we need better ways to access towels. Space saving over the cabinet towel holders will allow us to put paper towels, lab towels, and hang other items there. Students will be able to access towels safely and use them to clean up spills and collect and clean their new vegetables.

The students will use the hydroponics system to learn about nutrition, plant cycles, fertilizer uptake and pollination.
