Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with students with moderate to severe disabilities; some are non-verbal, some are minimal verbal, and many have low cognitive abilities. Together we run a large horticulture program and Farmer’s Market. My students are all unique individuals and I differentiate instruction based on their needs.
While working in our school-garden and at the weekly farm stand, my students continuously work on expanding their communication skills and independence.
In preparation for future employment, students practice communicating with each others, other colleagues on campus and supervisors. In preparation for their future and life outside of school, students need to practice to think and work as independently as possible.
My Project
We are back at school and students are loving working in our school garden. Our vegetable garden is growing and our fruit trees are ready to bloom. We are looking forward to harvesting various types of fruit.
By providing my students with all the tools necessary to make jams and jellies, students will learn how to use everything we grow together here at school and practice following recipes.
Learning to make jams and jellies is fun for all students: students harvest and wash the fruit, practice using blenders or juicers and then follow the recipe step-by-step until they can proudly sell the finished product at our farm stand.
