This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Ms. C can I silent read?" is something I have fought to hear since the beginning of the school year. When school first started, I literally had to force my students to read. I had stamina challenges in which the AM class always won. The PM class is starting to catch up now.
I currently have a total of 44 second graders.
Although I try to encourage them to have their parents/guardians purchase them books, the funding is not always available for whatever reason. Exposing them to a chapter book such as "Flat Stanley", will be the first book of its kind that over 50% of my students have come in contact with. Not only is "Flat Stanley" a fun book to read, but the project that will go along with it will brighten the faces on my students (especially that of the PM class).
My Project
Flat Stanley is a story about a boy that was literally shipped all over the place. He was able to experience unordinary things because he was flattened by his bulletin board.
By doing this project, my students will get an opportunity to no only read about Flat Stanley's adventures, but they will get a chance to send or take their Flat Stanley to different places which will in turn increase their knowledge of the world around them.
This project will be something unlike anything they've experienced because some of them haven't been outside of their neighborhood and this will allow them to vicariously travel through Flat Stanley.
