My Students
I have had the privilege of teaching at my current school for the past 8 years. The last 5 have been spent teaching our school's youngest learners. These 4- and 5-year-old children come to school with a variety of experiences. Our location is extremely diverse in cultures and socioeconomic background. Most of my kiddos are coming to school with no previous school experiences.
For the first time in their young lives, students experience non-preferred tasks for extended periods of time.
The demand is high, and the days are long, so I find ways to make parts of the day feel play based and allow students to self-select activities. I strive to provide my students with engaging activities that make learning meaningful and, may I dare say, fun.
My Project
Please help my students fully explore geometry with quality materials that allow them to compare and build two and three dimensional shapes. Items like Geostix give students the opportunity to build two dimensional shapes, and expand their understanding of the attributes of a shape, like sides and angles. The Geometric Building Kit will allow students to build three dimensional shapes and develop their understanding of the relationship between shapes.
Geometry is a critical math concept that must be fully explored with concrete items to develop deep understanding.
These hands-on experiences are essential before students can move on to more abstract applications of geometry. The color and quality of these materials will keep young children engaged and learning for years to come.
