Let's Talk About Race and Culture

My students need 10 copies of the book "Brown Boy" to stimulate conversations surrounding social issues affecting the African American society and for me, books about Culturally Responsive teaching to learn best practices for instruction!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Fay's classroom raised $318

My Students

In my classroom there are 18 eager first graders.

My students are curious, active, and always keep me on my toes!

Our school qualifies as Title I school with an astounding poverty rate. Many students come to school carrying more baggage than just their backpacks. Despite their hurdles, these first graders are committed and excited every single day. They love learning and always give me their all. Most importantly we are a family and we always take care of each other.

My Project

When people say "I don't see color, I see people" I cringe. You HAVE to see color to see culture and culture is what makes people unique! The children's book "Brown Boy" will be used as a catalyst for conversations with my students about race, culture, and social awareness. After reading this book in my classroom I plan to use the other copies to check out to families to enable more in depth conversations at home. Also included are texts about culturally responsive teaching. As a white woman that teaches predominantly African American students it is important that I am constantly examining my teaching practices in order to best reach my students. Using these texts I will learn best practices to embrace and celebrate the culture of my students while raising rigor and enthusiasm.
