Help me give my students the opportunity to read and engage with novels through small group discussions. To improve motivation, I am including graphic novels to encourage struggling readers that may have difficulty with longer text.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In my classroom, my goal is to encourage the enjoyment of reading a good book. By providing students a variety of books from our grade level reading list, I plan on setting up Literature Circles whereby students can meet in small groups to read and discuss their selected novels. For some of my students that require learning accommodations, I will have a CD player available to listen to the novels. This will allow them to participate without the barriers of reading ability. The students will engage in collaborative conversations that will allow them to practice listening to each other, and taking turns sharing differing points. These small groups will be facilitated by the teacher. As a result, I hope to increase their vocabulary, comprehension, and application of reading skills being taught by transferring reflections of conversations or significant events read onto their journals.
My hope is that with your contributions, my students will be encouraged to want to read more due to the availability of novels, and realize that books open the doors to many different experiences.
As a culminating activity, the students will write and share book reviews to encourage their peers to read and wisely select books that may intrigue their curiosity.
