Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have the unique opportunity to participate in project based learning. They learn the sciences and social sciences by conducting research, collaborating in small learning groups, and completing independent projects that cover global issues and 21st century skills.

My students are all English Language learners who participate in our Spanish Bilingual Maintenance program.

They are establishing a strong ownership of their native language while also learning English. Research shows that students who learn in two languages tend to perform at a higher success rate as they get older. They are able to communicate better, use higher vocabulary, and learn skills they can utilize in today's global economy. They are growing these skills now in completing their projects. The students complete their social studies projects in Spanish and Science projects in English. They are therefore practicing communication skills, presentation skills, reading, writing, and research in both languages. Many of our students come from low socioeconomic homes who have limited access to technology to practice these skills. We therefore provide them with these opportunities in the classroom.

My Project

My students are currently working on a unit about the environment. The unit titled Teach for the Planet will teach students ways to conserve water, energy, decrease pollution, and the benefits of recycling. My students need two Apple MacBook Air Laptops to conduct their research, find resources in Spanish and English, and complete a final presentation. Students will then be given the opportunity to share their final presentations to their classmates, peers in other classrooms, and parents. These presentations will also give my students an opportunity to continue developing their oral communication skills, develop confidence, and feel successful. By participating in this project my students will learn about important environmental issues through their research, will learn how to take action on these global issues, and will have learned to collaborate in small groups.

The donated laptops will support student learning both academically and socially.

By the end of this project students will participate in project based learning using technology to guide their research. Importantly, they will learn about environmental issues that impact their current and future lives while utilizing 21st century skills.
