Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in an elementary school as a speech language therapist in a low income area of the Morrisania section of the South Bronx, NY. Many of my students encounter daily living challenges that negatively effect them academically and emotionally, and at times, extending into the classroom setting. The students I service have learning and speech language disabilities. Regardless of the challenges they face, they enjoy attending speech therapy sessions as I provide opportunities to engage them with activities to develop their expressive and receptive language skills. This empowers them to increase communication skills, decreasing frustration behaviors when expressing and processing language. My students mostly love interactive activities but they feel most successful when they are able to achieve their speech and language objectives each session and build communication effectively in and out of the classroom.
My Project
The sequencing cards will assist my students who have difficulty processing expressive and receptive language to retell events, stories, and following directives for processing what they hear, for speaking and writing. Most of my students learn best with the use of hands-on manipulatives to engage and develop their skills.
My students need to develop their ability to initiate and expand conversations with useful and relevant information.
Using the sentence starters activity will be a fun resource to help them generate sentences and make personal connections to the topic. By introducing my students to these resources, it will allow them to negotiate their social emotional develop skills and interactions in the classroom.
