Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 8th Grade U.S. History in an arts and technology magnet program. We are housed in a large, urban, Title I middle school with a limited budget and aging facilities.
My students are gifted, highly-engaged, creative thinkers who love to imagine, collaborate, and create.
They are a diverse group of middle school students who hail from a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
As a teacher, I am responsible for creating a curriculum which is both challenging and engaging. My goal with any project is to invest students with the tools they need to improve literacy and critical thinking skills through the use of primary and secondary source documents.
My Project
During this last school year, my school was awarded a grant from Verizon that put a take-home iPad in the hands of each student. It was the student's responsibility, however, to come to school with the iPad charged. It didn't always work out that way. I ended up purchasing my own charging dock, which worked nicely for most of the year. Yet, it still didn't have enough ports to serve everyone who needed electricity. Hence, the charging stations. In addition, we write a lot. Typing on an iPad is a whole lot easier when you have enough keyboards for everyone in the room. Unfortunately, with almost daily use of keyboards, they face a lot of wear and tear. Hence, the keyboards. Although there is no timeline for when we will all be 'back in school', I am attempting to think ahead and troubleshoot some of the obstacles now. Distance learning has made using programs such as Google Docs even more essential. The fact is, we need to stay charged and keyboard ready! Will you help us with our goal?
