My Students

In a low-income community where more than half of the students have free or reduced-price lunch, not every child has the opportunity to attend school. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many children have been indoors and separated from friends and family. This school year will look different, but no matter what the challenge is, I hope to build a strong foundation for their education.

These kiddos have been anxiously waiting to come to school and begin their adventure of learning!

I listen to parent feedback about how excited their children are to attend school, be a part of a school community, and begin their long road of learning. They are eager to dive in no matter what challenges or setbacks may arise over the next few months. This speaks magnitudes to the fearless personality of young learners.

My Project

Having a colorful and inviting classroom helps students get excited about the new school year. When they walk into a classroom and take in their new environment, they pay attention to every little detail. They look at the floors, walls, and everything available for them to use and have access to.

When students have a colorful, clean spot on the carpet to engage in student learning, whole group instruction is something they look forward to!

As a first grade teacher I use whole group instruction for read alouds, introducing new concepts, partner talk, etc... They want to be sitting somewhere clean and comfortable, where boundaries are already created and they can just enjoy that part of the day.

The pandemic has been very hard on these children. Many of them are hoping to come to school this year and just enjoy being in school, in a classroom, and learning. Something as a clean, inviting rug for them to learn on together is an important tool to use for whole group instruction.
