My Students

My students are hard working scholars who have opted to take my ECN 305 [The Economics of Personal Finance] through Syracuse University Project Advance. These students in our Harlem college preparatory public high school plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.

These students are willing to prioritize their education - they realize that education is their key to a better life.

Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level, they have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives. They realize that a solid education is the key to financial independence and career success.

My Project

I am fortunate to be moving into a classroom which is one of the few in our Harlem public high school outfitted with a SMARTBoard. However, the interactive pens that come with the board were not purchased. This renders the SMARTBoard much less effective than it could be. I'm seeking to add two interactive SMARTBoard pens so that I can modify my lessons by highlighting and underlying key points, drawing important instructional images onto check images, balance sheets, insurance documents, tax forms, credit card statements, credit reports, stock tables and many other images for my Personal Finance class. Additionally, students can write their own solutions directly onto the board to share with their classmates. Those written solutions can be saved and uploaded for absent students to catch up and learn from.

Students learn best when they are actively engaged in lessons; therefore, providing them with the opportunity to interact directly with the slides will enhance their focus and retention.

Furthermore, I am seeking a presenter "clicker" so that I can circulate around the room during lessons and engage with the students rather than being tethered to the board in order to move the slides forward and backward.
