Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After three years of teaching in the dual language program, I still am blown away by the students and families in my program. Never in my previous experiences had I worked in a school where ALL students were given the opportunity to speak Spanish and English, which has meant that I have African American, Latino and White students all working together during a lesson in beautiful Spanish. What a gift for our students! Their parents made the decision to give them the gift of bi-literacy and the opportunity to actively engage in an increasingly globalized world!

This year, my students will be in a new building and in a new community because our building was merged with another district school.

In a last minute, staffing move I was assigned to four-year-old kindergarten (4K).

I was initially nervous about the move and wondered whether or not I was the right person for these students. This class has shown me that 4K is the most joyful place to teach. My students arrive each day with a sense of wonder and the desire to learn. They are kind with each other and they continue to grow in their sense of community.

My Project

Dramatic play is an important part the early childhood experience and teaches students many important social and life skills, such as self-regulation, conflict resolution, and literacy. If done properly students have the

The market will be used to create a new center in order to revitalize dramatic play area.

Students will have the opportunity shop, check out classmates, and maintain the market. It is an excellent opportunity for them to engage in a real world social situation through play with their peers. The play market will provide with a new setting for practicing these skills.

Many of the students in my classroom come from home environments where they would not have the chance or materials to create a make believe store. With this project, I hope to provide with them with a new learning experience that they might not have elsewhere.
