This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first graders can't get enough of "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" A local children's theater company is performing adaptations of the popular Pigeon books, and my students would love to be able to attend!
My first graders come from a crime-ridden neighborhood with a very high poverty rate.
All of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Despite living in such a high needs community, my students love to learn and are excited to come to school.
We live in a world-class city with many theater performances just a short bus ride away. However, our limited school budget does not afford us the opportunity to attend costly performances, and families cannot contribute the necessary funds, either. Due to these financial constraints, few of my students have ever experienced live music, dance, or theater.
My Project
I would like to take my students to a live theater performance of "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" and other tales by Mo Willems. For nearly all of my students, this would be their first time going to a live theater. The musical is being performed by Emerald City Theatre, a well-known theater group that focuses on performances for children. This age-appropriate performance provides opportunities for student involvement and participation. Each of Willems' four most popular Pigeon books will be performed. By attending this musical, my students will be able to make connections between the musical and the Pigeon books we read in class. They will experience the power of the arts, and learn how artists interpret and act out the works of others.
Your donation will provide admission for 29 students and six adult chaperones, as well as bus transportation to and from the theater.
Your donation will make it possible for my students to experience live theater and music written and performed with young people in mind.
This is an opportunity for my students to not only enjoy adapted versions of a favorite book series, but also for my students to gain an appreciation of the arts.
Thank you for supporting teachers, students, and public education!
