Students at our North Carolina public elementary school come from diverse cultures and backgrounds. The majority of our students, 67%, received free or reduced-price lunch last year.
The children we teach come from very different backgrounds which means students come to our school with varying levels of prior knowledge and skills – knowledge and skills that serve as the foundation of academic achievements.
We have the privilege of teaching between 100-120 Kindergarteners every year and their diversity and needs mirror our school averages.
My Project
My project includes a variety of age-appropriate read-aloud picture books, colorful posters and a sampling of music from around the world; enough for 6 classes.
These much-needed materials will help our 6 Kindergarten teachers teach effective lessons on global and cultural awareness at least once a week to our young learners.
My students need books that will help them increase their cultural awareness and understanding of others. Understanding that their school, their country, their world, is made up of diverse people and learning how to celebrate that diversity, is a life skill that I feel can be taught in Kindergarten.
The materials that have been requested are enough for 6 Kindergarten teachers and will be used year after year, impacting hundreds of young minds.
More than half of students from low‑income households
